An unforgettable experience - Camino de Santiago
Every year, thousands of pilgrims from all over the world go to Santiago (camino de santiago), an ancient medieval road that leads to the city of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.
Santiago or his other name Jacob Ben Zabdi was one of the twelve messengers of Jesus and the first meritorious sent to spread the gospel on the Iberian Peninsula. When he returned to Jerusalem he was executed. His head was beheaded and kept in the Armenian Church in Jerusalem, his body sent by boat to the sea and swept off the coast of Galicia, Spain, covered with clamshells (pilgrim's emblem). It was buried at the site without identification and only about 800 years later was discovered by an innocent shepherd from the nearby town of Federon who witnessed a rare phenomenon of stars (the Milky Way) illuminating the night sky above the burial ground of Jacob the Apostle. The remains of his body were identified by the city bishop and the place was declared a place Sacred to Christianity and given the name Compostella (Starfield), the period is the occupation of Spanish lands by teachers and thus the fisherman from Tiberias becomes "Santiago of Tamores" - the Santiago kills teachers. In the world of Christianity after Rome and Jerusalem, for centuries, pastors, kings, bishops, emperors, and anyone who sought forgiveness from the Church or cleansed of the past sickness walked.
The journey following Santiago has been going on for over a thousand years, but has been abandoned over time. In the second half of the 20th century, the old road returned to consciousness and became a modern "trek". If a few hundred pilgrims walked the route in the 1960s, in recent years the number has risen to about 300,000 hikers a year, with most not doing the route for religious reasons but for leisure. As the road became especially popular with UNESCO declaring it as a World Heritage Site in 1993.
Many trails lead to the city of Santiago de Compostela. The starting points are many and varied. The route is different and challenging in each of the trails. From small and picturesque towns in Spain's many districts (La Rioja, Navarra, Asturias, Basques, Castile and Leon, Galicia and more) to agricultural areas, orchards, vineyards and even big cities like Pamplona, Leon, Oviedo, Burgos and more. Its uniqueness, the landscape that characterizes it, the culture and history around it and its human and culinary texture, each way is a different experience.
The Camino de Santiago is an empowering human experience, a journey that will leave a mark on your memory long after you return from it.
